Lynksys router, Linux Flash
Apparently I have undervalued my router. Linksys released the source code to its firmware under the GNU General Public License. This allows anyone to modify the firmware to their own ends and make the device better.
Since I bought it, connecting to it for network configuration was a bit of a hassle. The built-in Linksys GUI is clunky at best, and a bit slow. And you can't reboot it without hitting it with a power cycle, something that never made sense to me.
The device in question, a WRT54G V.4, carries a 200 MHz Broadcom processor and 16 megabytes of RAM. This hardware is sufficient to facilitate a robust aftermarket firmware.
Found this, called DD-WRT, and it is wonderful. Support for Virtual Private Networking, Quality of Service, Xlink Kai serving, overclocking (!), non-fugly GUI (skinnable as well) and myriad other enhancements (remote rebooting, thank Allah, plus real time monitoring of the router's system resources) are included and it's fucking free. So if you own a router like this, check out the above site or, for a broader look at what's available (there are other firmwares) check here.
